Western Canada's First-Ever WHIPLASH OPEN-AIR FESTIVAL Scheduled For September
June 12, 2005ACANTHA, BLACKSKY, CESSATE, DECIPHER, DIVINITY, NECROBIOSIS, NECRONAUT, OPERATION WINTER MIST, SUFFERANCE and WORMBOX are among the bands confirmed for the first-ever Whiplash Open-Air Festival, set to take place September 3-4 in Strathmore, Alberta, Canada. Nestled in the gorgeous foothills near Calgary, Alberta, Strathmore is the perfect location for such an event. Whiplash will be modelled after a European-style festival recreating the European festival "spirit": outdoors, two days, two stages, with camping, vendors and much more.
Driven and organzed by a small consortium of Alberta metal fans and business people, the festival concept is spearhead by the founders of The Metal Observer, one of the world's longest-running metal web sites. "We really want to bring the flavor of a European festival to Western Canada," commented the organizers in a statement. Building on the successes of other local metal festivals such as the Lethbridge Deathfest and The Okanagan Deathfest, the organizers felt the time is right to take it one step further.
"People in the area have been asking for a full-scale metal festival for a long time and we feel that rock and metal fans will enjoy such an event on a holiday long weekend," the organizers explained. "The metal spirit is alive and well in Western Canada! As a new venture we are open to any ideas, suggestions, and invite all interested bands, media and metal organizations from around the world to contact us and help turn this promising idea into a succesful annual event."
